Opening night on 24 May 2019, Keines House / Bremen, GER
For “Coexist”, Adrienn Hód, along with her company Hodworks, and Bremen based dance company Unusual Symptoms collaborate with each other for the first time. In their work, ten dancers deploy a disingenuous and merciless view on political and social claims, wherein their bodies move, and which form and influence them. Darkly humorous, utilising an ecstatic dance language, they uncompromisingly mirror the present age. Between empathic gestures and an ambivalent play with taboo and convention, personal history and social discourse, they confront the audience with their limits of perception, challenging them to question their own stereotypes and positions, reconfiguring their relations. In their new work, Hodworks and Unusual Symptoms directly connect with the discursive and choreographic pondering with which choreographer Adrienn Hód most recently explored political and social normative sets inwhich bodies move, which form them and influence them. Whether dealing with the radical exploration of naked bodies, evoking extreme conditions of emotional and linguistical expression or sending her dancers into an ecstatic stream of consciousness between personal stories and fragments of current social discourse: Hód always tries to push the boundaries of performative depiction and to open new space for perspective and narration behind taboos and conventions of gazes and expectations. In this manner, her plays arrive at completely new dance forms and dramaturgic principles, again and again, radically rethinking the possibilitiesinherent in contemporary dance. Unusual Symptoms’ productions take inspiration from different methods and artistic as well as cultural influences that flow together in open work processes. The differing approaches in content and style inherent in the different works always react anew to current artistic requirements. Since 2012, Unusual Symptoms are company-in-residence at Theater Bremen, Germany, whose dance department since then has been led by them. From the 2018/2019 season on, Alexandra Morales and Gregor Runge took over the company’s artistic reins, opening its doors even more than before to working with varying guest choreographers. Besides the work of french-algerian house choreographer Samir Akika, Unusual Symptoms produce works with internationally renowned choreographers like Máté Mészáros, Núria Guiu Sagarra, Helder Seabra and Adrienn Hód/Hodworks, initiate projects with young adults and semi-professional performers and collaborate with artistic partners around the globe.
