In the carefully constructed performance of Grace, we are confronted with abstract situations that lead us into a glamorous and humorous, but often dark rituals that override norms and societal constraints. In Grace, the company of HODWORKS, after having explored physicality on many levels, reaches for the spoken word. The theatrical space of the performance serves as an alibi for the dancers to do on stage all the things we don’t always find the freedom to do in life. Civil verbality is brought to the stage in an almost stand-up-style, as a kind of communal confession. And what is said carries just as much weight as the uninhibited gestures. Throughout the performance, the four performers march forward at a pulsating pace, their glittering presence highlights that all taboos are only a matter of context. Forbiddenness and acceptance can be constantly rewritten, and Grace takes advantage of this opportunity on several occasions.
